Angesichts planetarer Grenzen und ökologischer Kipppunkte zeigen sich Algen heute als branchenübergreifendes «Hope-Material», das veränderte Denkweisen, Visionen und Ansprüche in sich vereint: Designer:innen wagen Fashionexperimente, Food Scientists sehen Spirulina als Superfood und Algen könnten petrochemische Stoffe ersetzen.
deus ex alga will dabei weder eine universelle Antwort geben noch eine vollständige Sammlung sein, sondern zum Nachdenken über Zukünfte jenseits fossiler Abhängigkeiten und dysfunktionaler Produktionsmuster anregen. Eine Einladung, Materialexperimente zu wagen, neue Narrative zu entwickeln und den Dialog zwischen Mensch und Materie zu eröffnen.

The themed exhibition deus ex alga presents algae as a speculative material and a cultural leitmotif in a post-fossil fuel age. The current fascination with bio-based algae materials is similar to the enthusiasm for plastic as a trend material in the 1960s.
In the context of planetary boundaries and ecological tipping points, algae are now emerging as a cross-sector ‘hope material’ that embodies new ways of thinking, visions and aspirations: designers are boldly experimenting with fashion, food scientists consider spirulina a superfood, and algae might even replace petrochemicals.
deus ex alga aims neither to provide a universal answer nor to be complete, but rather to encourage reflection on futures beyond fossil fuel dependencies and dysfunctional production patterns. An invitation to dare to experiment with materials, develop new narratives and open up a dialogue between humans and matter.
