Ein Song auf Spotify, eine Adresse auf Google Maps, ein Like auf Instagram – beinahe jede Tätigkeit im Internet ist mit einer Cloud verbunden. Die Cloud ist omnipräsent und dennoch unsichtbar. Alle nutzen sie, doch kaum jemand spricht über sie. Obwohl ihre Infrastruktur wesentliche Teile der globalen Systeme und unseres Alltags beeinflusst, bleibt ihre Materialität für die meisten von uns verborgen, ebenso wie die Ressourcennutzung, die Umweltauswirkungen und Machtstrukturen, die damit verbunden sind.
terra rara fungiert als eine Sichtbarmachung der binären Welt. Der Essayfilm sensibilisiert für die Herausforderungen des Informationszeitalters und das fehlende Problembewusstsein dafür. Die Komplexität der Cloud als vielschichtiges Konstrukt spiegelt sich im Aufbau und essayistischen Ansatz des Films wider. Bildwelten, Textstücke und tänzerische Elemente werden genutzt, um die Verwobenheit zwischen analogem und digitalem Raum aufzuzeigen. Unsichtbares wird sichtbar gemacht.

A song on Spotify, an address on Google Maps, a like on Instagram – almost every action on the internet is connected to a cloud. The cloud is omnipresent, yet invisible. Everyone uses it, but hardly anyone talks about it. Although its infrastructure affects essential parts of global systems and our daily lives, its materiality and the associated use of resources, environmental impact and power structures remain hidden from most of us.
terra rara functions as a visualisation of the binary world. The essay film raises awareness of the challenges of the information age and puts a spotlight on the problems involved. The complexity of the cloud as a multi-layered and yet invisible construct is reflected in the structure and essayistic approach of the film. Imagery, pieces of text and dance elements are employed to show how the analogue and digital space are interwoven. Thus, the invisible becomes visible.

Millions of hard disks, servers, routers, fiber optic cables and networks are combined into a single, virtual object: the cloud. Behind its intangible aesthetic lies an energy-intensive infrastructure. Data centers are the largest buildings of our time, and the Internet is becoming one of the world's biggest energy consumers. It already produces more greenhouse gas emissions than all air traffic. Still, no one talks about it.
In this interdisciplinary approach, design meets media studies, cultural anthropology, film and dance. I was interested in how knowledge can be conveyed and presented through the movement of bodies.
Information is represented by the states of 0 and 1. This foundation of digital technology enables the display of text, images, audio, and video in computers and other electronic devices.
